Engineered Solutions Division: Ideal Source for High-Performance

EAM-Mosca, founded in 1982, built a growing and profitable business by supplying innovative, high performing strapping machines to a few specific vertical markets. A combination of the 2008 recession and technology-driven changes in the health of its traditional markets, convinced management of the need to broaden its market base. Rather than trying to compete in additional markets with standard product offerings, EAM-Mosca instead decided to promote integrated strapping systems. By combining product transport, the Company’s highly regarded strapping machines and system controls developed to meet automated strapping process requirements, EAM-Mosca now offers systems for several additional markets.

How does the Engineered Solutions Division operate?

Engineered Solutions is a team of sales professionals, engineering design and fabrication resources in the EAM-Mosca organization. The team is focused on leveraging proven Mosca strapping technology, flexible machine design, a range of product handling and transport options, as well as integrated controls into superior application-driven solutions.

The increasing power and current flexibility of technology and demand by strapping users for faster, more reliable systems that fit their needs without compromise, is now a vital and exciting new business segment. Engineered Solutions opportunities typically begin with an inquiry, an on-site survey, followed by an internal technical review and quotation outlining the details of the proposed solution for customer consideration.
What is the Mosca technology on which the systems are built?

Mosca has developed strapping heads, for both high speed bundling and for heavier, high-tension palletizing type applications. Both heads utilize Mosca’s DC brushless direct-drive technology for long-lived, clean, quiet and precise operation. They also include Mosca’s proprietary Sonxs ultrasonic strap welding system. Sonixs generates strong seals at high speeds, calibrates parameters prior to each cycle for exceptional seal consistency, and seals both PP and PET strapping with equal consistency and zero emissions. The ability to seal PET strapping in high-speed bundling systems is a unique Mosca capability. Finally, precision strap feed tracks in Mosca bundlers and low friction, long-wearing gated tracks in larger systems are recognized for their exceptional strap feeding reliability in a broad variety of applications.

What machine models are included?

Engineered Solutions is focused on creating systems that are appropriate for the customer requirement. Any and all Mosca strapping machines can become the basis for a particular system. Installations to date range from high speed automated bundling and tote closing systems to larger shipping unit and pallet strapping systems that strap products ranging from doors and windows to cabinetry to compressors to bulk loads of food and beverage containers – all supported by appropriate material handling equipment and customized controls.

Are the conveyors and handling devices versatile?

EAM-Mosca offers a flexible line of motor-driven roller and belt conveyors to support its high-speed bundling equipment, along with various devices to square, center and rotate products traveling through the system. The lineup also includes heavier chain driven roller conveyor that mates with heavier duty strapping machines to secure larger products. In instances where standard EAM-Mosca conveyor isn’t optimal for an application, the Company will acquire appropriate products from supplier partners and integrate them into the delivered system.

Can controls be customized?

Current control technology, via sensors, controllers, and network access offers tremendous capability to adapt to specific requirements, whether within the strapping system or utilizing data transfer and integration capability by networking with a larger enterprise-based system.

Can you offer an example of an engineered high-speed strapping system?

A good example is a convenience store chain that utilized Mosca automated strappers to apply one strap to secure tote lids on products being transported from distribution centers to local retail stores. To increase security, the company decided to apply two straps per tote instead of one but required that throughput speed of over 20 totes per minute be maintained. EAM-Mosca’s engineered solution is a “tandem” system, including two automatic strappers in series, each with an integrated entry conveyor with pacing capability. Under normal conditions, each strapper would apply a strap to opposite ends of each tote lid. However, to keep up with production requirements, if one machine faults for any reason, the other strapper automatically applies both straps until the fault is cleared and system reset.

Do pallet and shipping unit systems offer similar flexibility?

Absolutely. EAM-Mosca offers equipment that places the strapping head on the top, side or underneath the product as the requirement dictates. Features include heads that index to meet the product to assure consistent strap tension when product position varies, ability to strap directly under the product, through a pallet void or select through or under automatically as warranted. A recent application-driven innovation tensions the strap by pulling it tight both from the top down and bottom up to provide precisely controlled tension on a product that could be damaged by too much tension but left poorly secured by too little. Machines can be integrated with EAM-Mosca built conveyor, special conveyor from one of our suppliers or with on-site conveyor. Basic controls are adapted to meet the needs of the specific strapping operation and integration with the greater customer operating system.
