Strapping Solutions: Mailing Industry

Even if you’re not in the mailing industry, you probably know that the U.S. Postal Service has a long history. In fact, the U.S. postal service can be traced back to 1775 when Benjamin Franklin was appointed the first Postmaster General. Clearly, the USPS, since designated as an independent agency with the postal reorganization act of 1970, has undergone multiple changes since its mission to deliver mail across the entire nation at an equitable rate was first created.

Core Industry for EAM-Mosca

Ever since its founders started EAM-Mosca, the mailing services industry was a key component of its growth. Marketing entry-level, reliable equipment to mailers and sales to the USPS itself helped establish EAM-Mosca as a leader in the industrial packaging and logistics industry. Its success with 5mm strapping and good technical support has been widely recognized.

Pre-Sorted Commercial Mail and USPS Marketing Mail*

One change by the USPS after Zip Codes were introduced in 1963, were discounted rates for businesses and non-profits who pre-sorted their mail, boosting their profit margins and saving the USPS from doing the work. (*The term Commercial Mail means commercial First-Class Mail and advertising mail is called USPS Marketing Mail by the Postal Service.) While there are different rates and priority delivery schedules for both pre-sort types, the rules for preparing them are the same. 500 or more letters or cards sorted to five-digit and three-digit ZIP codes need to be banded. According to the USPS, ‘strapping keeps your mail secure throughout processing and transportation’, another important reason for strap.

National Postal Forum for Service Partners

The National Postal Forum, (NPF), which was first held in 1967, brings together Postal Service Partners – the mailers and suppliers involved in the business to discuss new directions, automation updates and importantly, new rules. It was at an NPF show in 1995 that mailers found out that all sleeved trays had to be strapped lengthwise in order to maintain pre-sort discounts. Working on slim margins and tight deadlines, these discounts were important.

According to Bob Leighton, an EAM-Mosca company founder, it turned into a hectic show with booth visitors four-deep looking at general strapping equipment. And it was at this show that Gerd Mosca, founder of Mosca, GMBH, the German affiliate, said, “I’m going to develop an automatic strapping machine for those trays.” A predictor of the company mantra, ‘the strapping solutions company’, The USP-2/Traymaster development was fast-tracked and the first machine was shipped in June of 1996 to Allstate Insurance Company for processing trays of pre-sorted invoices.

Strapping Lengthwise Saves Time, Space

The USP-2/Traymaster straps trays automatically at speeds of up to 30/per minute. Because the system was designed specifically for trays, it straps trays lengthwise, without tray-turning or transfer accessories, saving floor space. With over 1000+ installations, the USP has an excellent reputation for operating in extremely high-cycle, high-speed environments. According to multiple customers, many units regularly strap over a million trays annually.

Field results show systems operating with little or no service issues even after three and four million cycles. One mailroom operator in charge of a high-speed monthly invoicing operation said, ‘It’s the best machine in the place. We just blow any dust out every night and it never gives us any trouble.’ The unit he was referring to had over 4M cycles and counting. The unique system has, over the years, incorporated technologically advanced design and fabrication methods, along with extremely close tolerances for solid and long-wearing construction. The UPS-2/Traymaster straps all standard corrugated and plastic corrugated full and half-trays with cost effective 5mm plastic strapping. The system features proven, non-jamming, self-threading strap feed and a highly-reliable tensioning system and sealing head.

Handling More than Trays?

If your mailroom needs the ability to strap flats tubs, trays and parcels, EAM-Mosca offers a number of strapping systems for mailrooms. The Mosca ROM Fusion is an entry level automatic strapper which will be on display at this year’s NPF Show. The Fusion is available in two arch sizes and heat-seal. Fully-automatic, in-line, conveyorized systems are also available. See the ROMP-6B for this latter option which features Mosca’s proprietary Sonixs ultrasonic sealer.
